Scott WolfInterview: Charles Mesure Talks About V Season 2!

by Craig Byrne

Charles Mesure's mercenary Hobbes and his reall tight shirts have added a militaristic side to the Fifth Column, and perhaps have even added some sexual tension to the premises with the show's Hobbes-Erica banter.

Now we're only two weeks away from the second season premiere of V, and in another interview from the V set visit roundtable, we share some words with Mr. Mesure. Be sure to come back to the site every Tuesday until then for new interviews, and past interviews can be found at the bottom of this page.

"He was getting quite tight with the team, [and] he was beginning to have some respect and loyalty for them," Mr. Mesure says of Hobbes' interactions with the Resistance when we last saw him. "He knew that we were up against a very legitimate and real threat; so, like it or not, we had to band together. Then at the end of Season 1, Marcus comes up with this mystery figure, and he was like 'maybe we can't get to you, but we can get to her,' and that obviously had a huge impact on Hobbes."

Lest anyone wonder who this "mystery figure" in the photograph at the end of Season 1 had been, Mesure reveals that the person in the photo is an ex-lover of Hobbes named Sarah. "She's someone very important to him, so when Marcus says 'we can get to Sarah,' he's got a lot of leverage over Hobbes," he explains. "So now he's caught right in the middle. He wants to be 100% behind the Resistance and Erica and those guys, but Marcus and the V's have a lot of leverage over him now. He's in a tough spot. He's really walking a tightrope. He's juggling; he's trying to do the right thing by everyone, and he's trying to support the Resistance, but he's trying to keep Sarah alive. So there will be some shady dealings going on."

When the scene between Mesure and Christopher Shyer's Marcus was originally shot, the actors did not yet know who would be in the photo. "When we played those scenes at the end of Season One where I'm dealing with Marcus, and he holds up this picture of this person that he'll get to, I was under the impression that it was my daughter. Well, now we know that it's not. Now we know that it's Sarah, my mystery ex-lover, and that's pretty much all that I know," he says.

Another character who the V's have leverage over is Morris Chestnut's character, Ryan. "My take on it is that he's in a tough spot just like Hobbes is," Charles says. "He knows that he really has to be with the Resistance. He knows what the right side is. But again, there's the issue of leverage, and he may have some stuff over him that is exploited. So again, like Hobbes, he's walking a bit of a tightrope. He is [still with the Fifth Column], but he's in a state of conflict."

HobbesCharles Mesure seems to be fine with not knowing what the future will hold for Kyle Hobbes. "It makes it very interesting," he says. "In a way it makes it easier, because you know you have one moment in front of you to play. Right now, as a choice, I'm very consciously pursuing that I'm with the Resistance. But the story could turn around in the space of one episode, and I could end up being Anna's right hand guy for a while. I could also see a scenario where Hobbes would take a bullet for Erica. There are all of these possibilities ahead, and I just don't know which way it's going to go." One thing, however, is certain -- the tight jeans and black shirt are here to stay, though there will be some variations, including the daring direction of "slightly gray' and "slightly charcoal."
